Our female teachers are highly motivated and dedicated to their students but they lack formal training. To help them improve their language and teaching skills, we have started a program of remote learning and online classes for the teachers. In autumn of 2025, we started with a reading club for the book “A thousand splendid suns” of Khaled Hosseini. However, the book is so depressing, that we pivoted to other topics halfway through. So far, we have held online meetings to discuss book chapters, we have read newspaper articles and most importantly, we have started to give the teachers “homework”, asking them to write texts and then send us pictures of the texts for us to correct. This is a useful exercise to improve their writing and grammar – something they have not had a chance to practice properly so far.
The teacher training gives us the opportunity to cover and discuss important topics ranging from teaching methods and use of AI for teaching to questions on healthcare and Afghan society vs. Western society. Teacher exams
To encourage the teachers to work on their grammar and writing skills, we have held a first teacher examination in our main center, supervised by our partners in the local community council. We prepared the exams, then we sent them to our partners, who handled the exam and sent us the scanned exam papers for correction. To incentivise participation in these exams, we are offering the following deal: Those who pass the exam get a pay raise, from 7000 afghani (roughly 100 Euros) to 8000 afghani a month. Over the coming year, we want to hold more exams, focusing on different grammar aspects and different topics and allowing the teachers to eventually improve both their English skills and their salaries to up to 10000 afghani a month. In the first exam, three of our teachers have gained themselves pay raises.
